Introducing My New Book – Paleo Pals: Jimmy and the Carrot Rocket Ship

I am beyond excited to announce that my new book, Paleo Pals: Jimmy and the Carrot Rocket Ship is now available for pre-order on Amazon!! Release date is scheduled for February 7th, 2012. I was inspired by my mom, Carol Purdy, to write this book.  My mom was a children’s book author and her spirit has been my bright light during this amazing journey.

As you all know I often blog, talk, podcast, and scream from the hilltops about the importance of kiddos eating paleo and how to get them involved, excited, and enjoying a paleo lifestyle. The reality is, making the transition to paleo for the family is hard work and can be daunting to say the very least and I realize that parents need a resource, a story, a hero if you will to help the kids get excited about this major life change. That’s where the Paleo Pals book comes in.  The Paleo Pals are three superhero children who come to the rescue when kids aren’t sure about eating paleo foods and they arrived determined and able to help! Here is the description of the story:

Piper, Phoenix and Parker are not ordinary children; they are super heroes that travel the land helping other children learn about living the healthiest, most exciting, most super lives possible. They are known as The Paleo Pals, and this is a story about how they help out Jimmy, a little boy who is not sure if eating paleo food is even one tiny bit exciting or super. Climb into the carrot rocket ship, travel to brilliant green farms, and live Jimmy’s exciting adventure with Piper, Phoenix and Parker: The Paleo Pals!

My own kids helped me develop the idea for this story and several other little ones have looked at the illustrations and have literally begged for more! The Paleo Pals book will also include a small handful of kid friendly paleo recipes to get your kids into the kitchen as well as valuable information about how paleo can and will meet your childs nutritional needs.  Furthermore, rest assured that soon to follow this storybook, I will be releasing a full blown Paleo Pals cookbook filled with recipes that will keep your family happy for many meals to come.

This is awesome. You rock Sarah. Unique events like this one is EXACTLY what the primal/paleo/ancestral movement needs. I sincerely believe this is going to be huge. We all owe you a huge thanks and a hell of a lot of good luck with this book.

The kids are our future. It’s sickens me to see obese 10 year olds. Those are the ones that do what their parents tell them to do. They don’t know any better. If anyone looks at an obese 10 year old and tells them that its fault their fat then they should be put in prison.

Ok, that’s rough talk but really… the fact that you have little ones and have a high traffic blog is huge. I want dozens upon dozens of more cookbooks to be released but unique books like this are what can take allow this to take a T-Rex step instead of those baby steps.

John Durant is working on a love story and I can’t wait till that comes out. I think the I, Caveman show was a big deal too. I can see an entire series related to that coming soon. I’d love to be apart of it!

    Oh how exciting!

That is amazing! Just a few days ago I was thinking someone should write a paleo book for children and now I’ve just seen this announcement! I will definitely be getting a copy for my children.

    Thanks Sarah!

  3. Myriam says

You are an inspiration! Thank you for all you’ve done so far and all you’ll do. I think it’s really huge… (I’m not sure my english is all good but I’m following your blog from France, I have an excuse ;) )

I’m so happy to see a resource like this! I thought my husband would be the most difficult to get on the paleo-wagon, but my girls are having a really hard time. My 7 y/o learned all about the food pyramid in 1st grade (last year). :( I didn’t realize just how ingrained that information was, until a couple of days ago she started talking about it at breakfast. She still remembers VERY clearly that the Food Pyramid says we’re supposed to eat 6-8 servings of grains a day. AAAARRRRGGGHHHH! I let her know that while yes, she was right about what the FP says, that there are lots people who can’t eat grains because it makes them sick — like me & daddy — but that we still eat very healthy diets. I know the school means well, but it’s so frustrating to have to battle family, friends, and now the school over what my kids are taught is healthy.

    • says

Elizabeth, our kids get shown the same over here in Australia but are old enough to realise that they don’t need to eat that much grain based food. Another angle you can advantage of is the fact that if the school is still showing the food pyramid, then although it’s “official” it’s actually very old information (even by USDA standards) and the way you eat is based on new information. This is also useful as it shows that even “official” advice changes as we learn more.

      • Elizabeth says

Thanks, Nick! My 7 y/o is very much a rule-follower. She wants to do the right thing, always. She’s also very logical, though, so I think explaining that the FP is outdated and that we want to stay healthy by following the new information is a GREAT tactic to try.

OK, my mind is racing now! I’m thinking that, as a family project, we could design our own food pyramid. We talk about our ancestors a lot in our home, and I think relating those two things may go a long way in helping them “connect the dots,” so to speak.

This is fantastic. Congratulations! I was in my township’s library the other day looking over the non-fiction books about food and digestion and it was so depressing to see the USDA food pyramid extolled with not one dissenting or alternative perspective presented. It is a long, difficult road right now getting rid of the grains and sugar in my pantry, so I am super excited to share this book with my kids when it comes out. Way to go!

  6. Julia says

This is an awesome idea! i’m not even married yet (our wedding is September 2012) and i’m thinking of ordering this book already :-) Keep up the excellent work.

    • Sarah says

Awesome Julia, I think people will enjoy it with or without kids, and congratulations on your upcoming wedding. My anniversary is in September – a great month to get married! : )

  7. says

That’s just too cool Sarah! I’ve thought about writing a children’s Paleo book too. :)

I love that you used superheors because, indeed, Paleo people are superheroes. That’s the perfect association. Just regular Joe’s wouldn’t have done.

Can’t wait to get the book and read it to my daughter!

  8. Katie says

I am so looking forward to this. Thank you so much for addressing this. I have a very picky 7 year old girl who we have slowly been changing her eating habits after reading your cookbook, but we are also trying to get her to understand why she is eating this way. I am excited to see what she thinks of this. I am also looking forward to the cookbook. My 4 year old eats pretty much anything so keep your fingers crossed this helps my 7 year old. Thanks for helping with the age old battle of food with your kids.

  9. says

Congratulations on the new book. It looks great. I’ll be getting this for my grandbabies for Christmas. Perhaps I can infiltrate the eating habits of their house from the bottom up…

  10. Amada Cortez says

How EXCITING! I want that book for my kids and the neighbor kids. Do you know if there will be a kindle version, I just recently pre-ordered the new Kindle Fire?

  11. mary b says

What a great idea! My 7 yo loves your cookbook and always wants to know which one of your boys may like a certain recipe before he tries it. This book will be perfect for him.

  12. Jenny says

Sarah you are truly amazing! Habits start from the ground up and you have created a way to teach kids how/why eating healthy is important…AND what eating healthy really means. You are a hero in the paleo world, but more outside of it as you are helping people everyday realize how to be healthier, stronger individuals. Thank you! I can’t wait to send this book off to my nieces and nephew.

  13. Savannah Salmans says

AWESOME idea! I love it. Pre ordering now! Great job Sarah. Who knows, the next step may be a Paleo Pals movie with a cooking demo. ;)

  14. says

This is SO NEEDED! Kids respond to characters on junk food packaging, now real food has a face and can generate a fan base. Every primary school in the English speaking world ought to be adding this to the curriculum starting in 1st grade.

  15. Dana Post says

YOU KNOW I ordered this, Sarah! Even though my kids may be a little “old,” it will spur more great conversations! So proud of you and Happy Happy about the constant new resources you are churning out ;)

  16. says

Congratulations Sarah. This book looks perfect for my two little paleo-eating, super hero boys, ages 6 and 10. What a wonderful testament to your mother’s memory to create something so fun and creative that will help kids feel good about making healthy choices. Can’t wait to get my hands on a copy.

  17. says

Oh wow, this is so exciting! Congratulations! Going ‘paleo family’ *is* hard work – I am up at 5am today to get everything ready for my kids and while that isn’t usual or even necessary most of the time – it is a reflection of the commitment required especially at the beginning. It even fits into my superhero mom theme – how about superhero families? Adding to my Amazon store right now! :-)

  18. Thomas Hallock says

Sarah this was a wonderful Idea!! What a honor to your mother to publish a children’s book!! I am posting your announcement here on our LC Media/Research thread,at Always Low Carb Forums!! There are many members following the Paleo/Primal WOE and your book will be such an asset to parents !!

  19. Holly says

Just pre-ordered this book. I am excited. My kids are having a hard time getting with the program. Hubby is on his way but can’t give up POP!! (neither can the kids) My oldest is off grains about 90% due to it making him very ill. The other two are having a very hard time with it. Still living on pop and bread (not as much….)….I am totally off grains and pop (have been for 2 years -started out with Atkins then Paleo/Primal this year).

I can’t wait for your parent’s cookbook….Love your current cookbook so I know I will love the parent’s cookbook as well as the kids book.

Thank you so much for devoting your time and energy to the rest of us needing help. :D
    Holly

  20. Keesa says

YAY!! This is sooo exciting! I have never commented but I use your cookbook and visit your site almost everyday! The lunch lady at my daughter’s school came up to me this morning and said she told my daughter that she always has the tastiest looking lunches out of all the kids and my daughter said, “it’s cause my mom is the best cook!” It’s always leftovers from dinner the night before! Thank you Sarah for making me a better cook! :-D You are making a huge difference in people’s lives and this book is going to be a HUGE success!!

    • Sarah says

Thank you so much Keesa! I love your comment about the school lunch lady at your daughter’s school – too awesome!!

  21. Katie says

I just preordered it for all my nieces and nephews. Our whole family lives a very healthy lifestyle but there is so much misinformation clogging their brains everyday from school to tv, etc…it is everywhere. Its nice to have a tool to combat all the false media and reinforce truth and help kids learn to use common sense! This is a great resource, thank you for having the passion and creativity to come up with it-thank you for supporting change!

  22. says

SARAH! You never cease to amaze me! I just posted a link to your ‘surviving halloween’ blog on our blog, and we are so excited for the knowledge that you bring to small minds and big ones! Many thanks for making the transition doable and fun! Not a mother, but an aunt, and your books will fill my nieces and nephews stockings!<3

  23. Casey says

I started my baby out Paleo, and she’s probably a little too young for this book, but I’m going to pick it up anyway and tuck it away for in a couple of years. I think having something like this will be wonderful to help reinforce the way we eat when she starts being in the position to make her own food choices. This book was an excellent idea!!

  24. Vickie says

    Hi Sarah:

As soon as I read that your mom was Carol Purdy, I knew exactly who she was. Having homeschooled my children for 22 years now, children’s literature has been one of my passions and I’ve collected some “treasures” for our own personal library. “Least of All” is still one of my favorite stories and will remain on our shelves for our grandchildren to enjoy.

Although my youngest of 5 is now 16, we are finding our way into a Paleo lifestyle. Robb Wolf’s book led us to you. I bought your cookbook yesterday, made your pork loin with cherry sauce for dinner last night (fabulous taste!) and came to your website for the first time today. Looking forward to getting to know you through your blog.

Congratulations on your new children’s book! As a fellow author, I know the joy involved in seeing your work come to fruition.

Blessings to you and your family!

    • Sarah says

      Hi Vickie,
Thank you so much for commenting, just knowing that my Mom’s books are still being read and treasured brings me immense joy! Thank you so much!!

  25. Glenn says

Sarah, I’m sure you feel the excitement generated by this. This targeted market is what parents are excited about. It’s our kids, our future, our next leaders. This book will be very heavily anticipated. I hope this leads book two, three and four for kids, followed by comic series, and films. Sarah, I think, and feel that J.K Rowlings may soon lose her crown. Love it.

  26. says

Awesome! Pre-order placed for my niece and nephew! Hopefully it’s successful enough to warrant many more kid’s books. I’m working on a kid’s book of my own. Would love to hear about the formation and process of putting this whole thing together. Congrats Sarah, keep up the great work!

    • Sarah says

Thanks so much Dorian! The process has been very fun, a lot of input from my family, and my mom was a children’s book author so reading her books and other of our favorites has been my inspiration.

  27. Jason Wessels says

Just received notification from Amazon that my pre-order has been cancelled due to a lack of availability from the supplier. Should I order it somewhere else?

    • Sarah says

You most likely ordered the Paleo Pals Cookbook which was set to be released in May rather than the storybook Paleo Pals: Jimmy and the Carrot Rocket Ship. The Paleo Pals Cookbook project has been put on hold but Amazon should start shipping Paleo Pals: Jimmy and the Carrot Rocket Ship next week!

  28. Heather says

Well since my daughter is named Piper, this bookis a must :-) Love your site, it has changed our lives. My son is 8 and has suffered his whole life with atopic dermatitis, been to numerous doctors, allergists, dermatologists, naturopaths…etc Switched to Paleo and he is now 99.9% better. It’s a dream come true, no more medications either!!!

    • Sarah says

So cool that your daughter’s name is Piper! Thanks also for your kind comment, I’m so happy to hear that your son is doing so much better. Big hugs to your family from me. : )

  29. Tonya says

We just borrowed Paleo Pals from the library and both my 12 yr old and 6 yr old loved it. My 6 yr old is a very picky eater and refuses to eat anything that isn’t nugget formed or bologna…i know….gross!!!!! Well, after reading your book as a nutrition lesson he has been trying new foods, including broccoli and fresh snap beans. My 12 yr old, who has celiac disease, also loved the recipes in the book because they were all gluten free. We are a rice loving family so I don’t know if we can go completely paleo, but because of your book we are going to push more towards non factory made foods.
