Don’t Cheat

*Note from Sarah: Here’s another post from Lisa.  You can catch up on her story by clicking here. You can also find Lisa on Facebook!

As many of you probably know, I first approached Sarah a few months ago for help because I was struggling with several autoimmune issues and after hearing about paleo, I sincerely hoped that finally I had found the answer I was looking for.  The title of this post is “Don’t Cheat” and any of you who have read either Everyday Paleo or The Paleo Solution know that Sarah and Robb both recommend NOT cheating for at least the first 30 days and then reassessing from there.  Sarah recommends to never cheat with anything that contains gluten and to cheat mindfully and to realize that cheating equals a setback for most folks; especially if recovering from an illness or if fat loss is their goal. With autoimmune; cheating takes on a whole other meaning, and here’s my story about how I learned the hard way.

Don’t cheat

Even I can screw things up, please learn from me……

A while back, my family and I went on a little get away for spring break. This was really my first big travel since going Paleo except for a day trip here or there.

I knew the area we were visiting well, including of course all of my old favorite dinning holes, pre-Paleo…..Amongst my favorite noshing pits lies in my opinion; the best gluten free pizza in the world.

My Holiday Ramblings and Our Christmas Menu

Wow, I can’t believe it’s almost here.  Christmas again.  I really do love the holidays but  I always find myself feeling nostalgic and a bit emotional as we head towards the 25th of December.  I miss the simplicity of how it used to be when I was little; when my mom was still with us and the innocence of not knowing that someday we would have to face Christmas without her. I miss when my grandma’s house in Huntington Beach, CA would be our warm winter escape from our old and drafty farmhouse in cold Northern California.  I miss the wonderful feeling of when the two week break from school would seem to last forever. Holiday Brussels Sprouts and Garlic Roasted Sweet Potatoes

Holiday Brussels Sprouts

I have several holiday recipes on the blog that you can find here, here, and here; but what’s wrong with a couple more!  My family and I will be traveling to visit my wonderful in-laws for Thanksgiving, so I thought I would come up with two fun side dishes that I can make and share while we are there.  Both are scrumptious and I’m looking forward to making both again in just a few days!

Paleo Thanksgiving Potluck Party For College Students!

Erika and her turkey

*Another budget friendly post by Erika Schuler!!

Thanksgiving it a time to celebrate all that we are thankful for: family, friends, good health and good old fashion paleo food! Last weekend I celebrated my first Thanksgiving of the year with my amazing college family…. potluck style. I roasted my first turkey ever and managed to stay away from burning it… it’s a MIRACLE!!! I am the only one of my friends who lives, eats, and breathes paleo, so when I sent out the invite for a Thanksgiving potluck party I wasn’t expecting it to be all paleo. With the amazing group of friends I have made at school they all respected my way of life and all cooked paleo dishes. With the exception of mashed potatoes, gravy and rolls :)

Healing from the Inside Out

For so many people (as in everyone) there is a heck of a lot more involved with this paleo thing than simply changing what we eat.  Jason has written some terrific posts about aesthetic goals, Dean has jumped in and blogged about the observations he has made during his interviews with folks who have traveled for a while on this paleo path, and I have written several blog posts about making changes not only in the food that fuels you but in how we view life in general.

What are YOU chasing – and of course a recipe…

I used to go to the gym with a mission.  A mission to fall on the ground in a heap, to crawl out of there with every muscle twitching, every fiber burning, every breath feeling like my last one, but it was a victorious feeling because I DID IT.  Then, I hit a big fat ugly wall and my entire life changed.  I will not bore you with the details but I went very quickly from being all or nothing – not only in life but in the gym – to barely being able to drag my tired, sorry, over-trained, under-slept, stressed out body out of bed.   [Read more...]

Can You Say – Sandwich???

img_9334

I had some left over Spice Rub Slow Cooked Chicken so I made myself a sandwich out of the leftovers for lunch today.  No, I’m not kidding, and no I haven’t fallen straight off the paleo wagon back to my old Subway days, but yes – I made a big ol’ sandwich and shared it with my almost 3 year old (he’s getting so darn big!!) who kept slapping his leg and falling backwards saying, “Mom, this is soooooo good!!” [Read more...]
