Sarah asked me to tell all of you about my upcoming book, The Paleo Coach, which will be released on March 5. I decided to give you a peak at the introduction because I think this is the best way to explain how this book is different and why I felt that it needed to be written. I hope you enjoy it! Perspective is everything.
If you cannot see a problem for what it really is, how can you expect to find its solution? Nutrition and fitness remain mysterious subjects to the masses because we have strayed from the logical concepts that make up their basic tenets and have come to put our faith in ridiculous ideals propagated by unsubstantiated hearsay and myth. But have no fear, I come bearing epiphanies.
This book is, like most other books, a result of personal passion. There is very little on these pages that I have not said out loud from atop my soapbox over the course of my career—or that is being conveyed by the mainstream nutrition and fitness powers that be, a fact that only further fuels my passion. It saddens me that the methods I, and many others like me, have used to help so many people are often literally the mirror opposite of what those people come to me believing to be true. It disgusts me that so many “experts” can completely ignore so much good science and literally thousands of shocking anecdotal cases in order to leave the same useless, albeit lucrative, protocols in place. It makes me want to scream when I hear nonsense spewing from the mouths of celebrity doctors and trainers who could not possibly have done a shred of research to substantiate their claims. But it warms my heart every time I open someone’s eyes to the truth in terms of their health and fitness. That is why I wrote this book, which is nothing more than my best effort to help you see things differently, to show you how to effectively reach and maintain your health and fitness goals. If I am successful, you will be absolutely astonished by what your body will become.
Please understand that I honestly want to help. I think this will become clear as you read on, but I want to mention it now because there is a good chance that you may dislike some of the things that must be said. Most people in the Western world have forgotten what it means to be healthy, and it may not be easy or comfortable to get rid of the notions and habits that don’t serve that goal, but it does neither of us any good if I simply hand you a set of nutrition and fitness rules and then whip out my pom-poms and cheer for you like other gurus who never got you anywhere near your goals. No,my mind is made up. I’m going to tell you the truth, even if I make a few enemies. My experience has taught me a lot about who fails and who succeeds, and I intend to share this knowledge with you. Some of these truths may sting a little, but we are going there anyway—there is no other option.
There is not one single trick or gimmick in this book. Not one shortcut. Tricks and gimmicks are for people who are satisfied with short-term, unsustainable results. Shortcuts are fantastic if you want to lose and regain the same ten or twenty pounds over and over and over again. Tricks that cheat the process are an easy sell, but I can’t, in good conscience, offer you anything but methods that yield real, lasting results. When we are done here you will see shortcuts for what they really are and always be able to spot their flawed logic in the future.
Paleo nutrition is a powerful life-changer, especially when paired with exercise founded on the same concepts, but it is merely a map from point A to point B. In the end, it will be up to you to decide whether to follow the path as it unfolds before you, and you will do so based in large part upon your understanding of the big picture. If this book is your first introduction to Paleo, fasten your seat belt: this is going to be an eye-opening adventure. If you are a seasoned Paleo pro, I intend for you to exit this ride with a deeper understanding of what you may have thought was nothing more than a diet.
I am not going to rehash every shred of scientific data pertinent to Paleo nutrition and exercise. Robb Wolf did a better job of that than I ever could with his most excellent book The Paleo Solution. I will, however, give you everything you need to succeed, and more importantly, make sure you don’t have any valid reasons to fail. All the tools and step-by-step instructions are included, but they will not be enough if you don’t know what your obstacles are before you come up against them.
Our first order of business is to remove the major obstacles from your path; then we will define Paleo and learn how it should be applied. We will do this by, you guessed it, changing your perspective. Just so we are clear, I’ll say it again: Perspective is everything. Let’s get started, shall we?
And there you have it. It should be clear to you now that The Paleo Coach is much more than a set of instructions or a list of rules. I wrote it as much for those who have been brainwashed my mainstream ridiculousness as I did for those who are really trying to get it right but can’t get past the pitfalls we face when “dieting.” I will not be so bold as to say that this book will eclipse every other fitness and nutrition book ever written, but I will say that it contains every ounce of my passion and it will leave you in a healthier place so that you might…
